Coinbase Acquires European Banking License to Expand Services
Coinbase has secured a full banking license from the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin), making it the first major US-based crypto exchange to obtain a European banking license. The license allows Coinbase to offer traditional banking services including euro-denominated accounts, payment processing, and lending services alongside its existing crypto trading and custody offerings across the European Economic Area.
The acquisition of the banking license is part of Coinbase's strategy to become a comprehensive financial services platform rather than purely a cryptocurrency exchange. CEO Brian Armstrong described the license as "a milestone in bringing the new financial system and the traditional financial system together under one roof."
Strategic Implications
With the banking license, Coinbase can now offer Euro IBAN accounts to its European customers, enabling direct salary deposits, bill payments, and seamless fiat-to-crypto conversions without requiring a separate bank account. The integration is expected to significantly reduce friction for European crypto users who currently need to transfer funds between traditional banks and the exchange.
The move puts Coinbase in direct competition with European neobanks like Revolut and N26, which have been expanding their own crypto offerings. However, Coinbase's deep expertise in crypto custody, compliance, and institutional services gives it a unique position in the market.
Regulatory observers note that the approval signals BaFin's confidence in Coinbase's compliance infrastructure and could pave the way for other crypto companies to pursue banking licenses in Europe.
