Nigeria Becomes Africa's First Country to Launch Regulated Crypto Exchange

Nigeria's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has granted regulatory approval for the country's first fully licensed cryptocurrency exchange, AfriCrypto Exchange, marking a historic moment for digital asset adoption in Africa's largest economy. The exchange has received a Digital Asset Exchange Provider (DAEP) license under Nigeria's new Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) framework.

The approval follows years of regulatory uncertainty in Nigeria, where the Central Bank had previously banned banks from facilitating crypto transactions in 2021 — a ban that was partially reversed in late 2023. The new VASP framework creates a clear path for crypto businesses to operate legally while meeting consumer protection and anti-money laundering requirements.

Impact on African Crypto Markets

Nigeria is already the largest cryptocurrency market in Africa by volume and one of the top five globally for peer-to-peer trading. The regulatory approval is expected to shift a significant portion of trading volume from informal P2P platforms to regulated exchanges, providing better price transparency and consumer protection for Nigerian crypto users.

The AfriCrypto Exchange will initially support Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, and the Nigerian eNaira digital currency, with plans to add more assets. Trading fees are set at 0.1% maker and 0.2% taker, which is competitive with global standards. The exchange has also integrated with local payment systems for seamless Naira deposits and withdrawals.

Several other African countries, including South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana, are developing similar regulatory frameworks, signaling a continent-wide shift toward regulated crypto markets.
